The old hydraulic castle
At around 5km from Follonica we meet the Carbonifera beach. It owes its name to the old hydraulic castle built in 1870 for the benefit of the region. The tower of the castle together with the small bridge are points of reference of this enchanting beach embedded in the sandy uninterrupted coastline that goes from Follonica to Piombino.
A beach for everyone
You can leave the car in the parking lot, and reach the sea by foot and choose between the free or furnished beaches. The sand is clear and fine, and the shallow depths, suitable for children, give rise to spectacular light and color play. The pine forest behind offers a nice relief from the hotter days.
How to get to Carbonifera
From the SS1 Aurelia, that connects Grosseto to Livorno, take the exit to Follonica Nord, turn at the first intersection following the signs for Torre Mozza, Carbonifera, Route Mortelliccio 1-2 (Strada Provinciale Aurelia Vecchia SP39).
