Tirli, small jewel in the woods

Tirli, fraction of Castiglione della Pescaia, is reclined on a hill and surrounded by wonderful woods of oak and chestnut.
The small village has medieval origins and is built of stone, according to ancient urbanistic traditions, so as to shield the houses from the cold winter winds and the summer sun.
Waling the paths through the woods that surround Tirli is a unique and moving experience that takes you far back in time. From these hills you can take in the sea and watch the boar, hare and deer that live freely in this uncontaminated nature.

Hermitage of Sant’Anna

Surrounded by the woods, not far outside Tirli, is the Hermitage of Sant’Anna, an interesting place that still welcomes many believers, also becausee of the spring dedicated to the patron saint of fertility.
It’s told that who drinks the water of the fountain wanting a child will receive the grace of Sant’Anna. The Hermitage is surrounded by a chestnut forest provided with rest areas. From here, through small paths, you can explore the woods and in the surroundings you can run into the ruins of the Hermitage of San Guglielmo di Malavalle, previously burial site of the siaint, damaged by the Sienese and rebuilt in the 18th century by the Augustinians.

San Guglielmo and the dragon

In the church of Sant’Andrea Apostolo the relics of San Guglielmo are preserved together with the rib of the dragon killed by the saint, according to legend. The church, built upon the ruins of a pre-existing chapel of the Augustinians who lived in the town in the 17th century, has a wonderful roman structure with baroque altars.

Typical dishes

In the many restaurants of Tirli it’s possible to try the typical Maremman specialties and particularly boar- and game-based dishes prepared according to old, zealously protected recipes. In the summer you can also participate in the fun tournamant of Palla Eh or Palla 21, old traditional sports, practiced also in other nearby towns.

How to get to Tirli

From Castiglione della Pescaia you take the highway 322 towards Follonica, after the intersection for Punta Ala an asphalted road (around 10km) leads to the town.
