Maremma Regional Park

The green lungs of Maremma

The Maremma Regional Park, also known as Uccellina Park (from the limestone rocks descending steeply to the sea that dominate the central and southern areas) covers a coastal area of about 10,000 hectares between Principina a Mare (about 20 km south of Castiglione della Pescaia) and the promontory of Talamone.
The Maremma Regional Park was established by a Tuscan Regional Law in 1975 as Nature Park. There are 3 districts in this region: Grosseto, Orbetello and Magliano in Toscana.

The park includes dense forests, finds, pristine beaches, huge pastures and a farm owned by the Region of Tuscany “Granaio Lorenese”, home of Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity entirely made of recycled and recovered materials.

Where Nature reigns unchallenged

From the swap areas of the “Swamp of the trap”, populated by webbed feet migratory and non-migratory to the granite cliffs covered by a dense Mediterranean of myrtle, strawberry trees and lentiscus, including rare dwarf palms. The territory by the Monti dell’Uccellina is covered by a Mediterranean evergreen forest with secular trees, where you can find different animal species as foxes, wild cats, deer and porcupines.
In the Maremma Natural Park is it possible to see grazing cows and cowboys. In fact, Tuscany really does have its own form of horseback heroes called butteri.

Itineraries to discover nature, history and flavor of the park

A visit to the Park involving different routes is a privileged opportunity to come into contact with nature and appreciate the beauty of the Maremma Natural Park. There are 16 planned routes on foot, 4 by bike, 4 on horseback, 4 by carriage, 2 by canoe and 1 on foot, and nocturnal itineraries. In collaboration with Slow Food are organized also wine tasting tours to discover the local organic products.
One of the most popular itineraries will take you to the San Rabano Abbey, a well preserved church in the Romanesque Style built in the early eleventh century. A second itinerary runs along the steep cliffs to discover ancient towers in the area from Castiglione della Pescaia to Talamone, built to defend the coast from pirate attacks. Others itineraries allow you to reach the wild beach of Marina di Alberese or the magnificent bay of Cala di Forno, with its crystal clear water and its crescent shaped beach. An occasion for everyone to enjoy the incredible beauty of the Tuscan Archipelago on the blue Tyrrhenian Sea.
