Saturnia have always been\u00a0very popular for its generous <strong>hot springs<\/strong> but also for its exclusive position on the <strong>top of a high hill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>The oldest town on the peninsula<\/h3>\n<p>According to some <strong>legends<\/strong> Saturnia was the first town founded in the Italian Peninsula in honor of the <strong>god\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Saturn<\/strong>, on a massive boulder of travertine, between <strong>Albegna<\/strong> River and the <strong>Stellata<\/strong> stream. Its origins are extremely\u00a0ancient dating back to the 20th century BC by the Pelasgians (pre-Hellenic population of unknown\u00a0origin). The presence of ancient stone walls in polygonal-shape and colored travertine can be traced back to\u00a0this period.<\/p>\n<h3>Lose yourself at the spa and into the past<\/h3>\n<p>Historical Etruscan remains show that Saturnia is a very<strong> ancient city<\/strong>. The site is believed to have been continuously\u00a0inhabited as a city since at least the end of the <strong>8th century BC<\/strong>. Therefore Saturnia was called in ancient\u00a0times <strong>Aurinia<\/strong>. In <strong>280 BC<\/strong> it was conquered and colonized by the <strong>Romans<\/strong>, surrounding the town by\u00a0walls. The columns in the main piazza capture the essence of the <strong>Roman Empire<\/strong>. Forgotten for several centuries,\u00a0Saturnia was rediscovered and underwent a new development with the domain of <strong>Cosimo I de\u2019 Medici<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe large amount of finds from the Etruscan, Roman, Middle Ages and Renaissance also evidence the\u00a0<strong>millennial history<\/strong> of this town.<\/p>\n<h3>Saturnia legend<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>legend<\/strong> regarding the birth of Saturnia tells that the<strong> god Saturn<\/strong> found refuge there, driven away\u00a0from Olympus because of his misdeeds. Angry with the people who were always at <strong>war<\/strong> with each other, he\u00a0sent a thunderbolt to earth, giving life to a magic spring of warm sulphur water to annihilate them. In the\u00a0<strong>Middle Ages<\/strong> the hot vapors of the thermal waters were associated with sin and voluptuousness, and the\u00a0sources were identified with the <strong>gates of Hell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Natural Falls and Resort<\/h3>\n<p>The Mill Falls are natural pools that has become one the of the symbols of this region. These waterfalls flows\u00a0at 37.5\u00b0C all year round onto the travertine rock below.
