The Canon\u00a0Giovanni Chelli founded a library in Grosseto where he began to display antiquities in a somewhat random\u00a0fashion. The Museum brings together, with its 40 rooms, archaeological, historical and artistic evidence\u00a0about the Maremma.<\/p>\n

The Roselle History<\/h3>\n

The first 11 rooms of the Art and Archeological Museum of Maremma<\/strong> are dedicated to the Etruscan<\/strong> settlement\u00a0at Roselle<\/strong>. The city was conquered by the Romans<\/strong> and completely destroyed by the Saracens<\/strong> in 1138\u00a0<\/strong>with the expulsion of its inhabitants. In these rooms, which illustrate the history of one of the most important\u00a0and powerful Etruscan and Imperial cities of Maremma, are preserved votive objects, funerary finds, marbles\u00a0and roman portraits.<\/p>\n

A look at the Etruscan and Roman Maremma<\/h3>\n

Visitors can discover in the other rooms the archaeological history<\/strong> of the Maremma<\/strong>, admiring interesting\u00a0and valuable finds, especially from other major Etruscan cities as Saturnia<\/strong>, Vetulonia<\/strong>, Vulci<\/strong> and Cosa<\/strong>. On\u00a0the third floor a section dedicated to the medieval period of Grosseto.<\/p>\n

The museum is located in the historic centre of Grosseto, in an area which in 1870 the built up area was\u00a0bought and incorporated into the new construction for the Court and the district attorney\u2019s office at Piazza A.\u00a0Baccarini, 3.<\/p>\n
