It appears to have <strong>grown from the stone<\/strong> of this\u00a0wildly beautiful promontory, bounded by green valleys crossed by the\u00a0<strong>Lente,<\/strong> <strong>Prochio<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Meleta<\/strong> rivers. The\u00a0high walls of volcanic tuff, carved out by a thousand of caverns, project a series of <strong>tower-houses<\/strong>, thus heightening\u00a0the picturesque feel of this medieval town. After the <strong>Etruscan and Roman times<\/strong> the town became an\u00a0important center in the <strong>15th century<\/strong>. To visit it you have to pass through the arch known as \u201c<strong>La Porta<\/strong>\u201d (The\u00a0Door) that leads to Via Cavour flanked by arches of an aqueduct built in 1543 in honour of <strong>Gian Francesco\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Orsini<\/strong>. The two <strong>fountains<\/strong> in the adjacent of the <strong>Republic Square<\/strong> (Piazza della Repubblica) at the end of Via\u00a0Cavour constitute the terminal of the aqueduct. In the large square is the Orsini Palace, the powerful feudal\u00a0family which dominated before annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.<\/p>\n<h3>The land<\/h3>\n<p>Continuing from Piazza della Repubblica along Via Roma we reach the so called \u201c<strong>land<\/strong>\u201d: the district of<strong> Capisotto<\/strong>,\u00a0the oldest neighborhood in Pitigliano where is the Cathedral dedicated to <strong>Saints Peter and Paul<\/strong> and the\u00a0<strong>Church of St. Mary and St. Rocco<\/strong>, built in the <strong>12th century<\/strong> and rebuilt in the <strong>15th century<\/strong> in honor of <strong>Nicholas\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Orsini<\/strong>. On August 16th in occasion of the celebrations in honor of St. Rocco the women of the town offer\u00a0homemade biscuits.<\/p>\n<h3>The little Jerusalem<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">The oldest district of Pitigliano is the <strong>Jewish Ghetto<\/strong>, now a museum. In Pitigliano a large Jewish population\u00a0settled down there at the beginning of the 15th century and became an important refuge when they were\u00a0kicked out of the papal State, after the Papal Notes of 1555 and 1569 and the measures taken by the Grand\u00a0Duke of Tuscany in 1570. The <strong>synagogue<\/strong> (<strong>1598<\/strong>, with furnishings of the 17th and 18th centuries) is still officiated\u00a0from time to time. It was restored in<strong> 1995<\/strong>. Protected by the Orsini family, the Jewish community\u00a0flourished and the city became known as La Piccola Gerusalemme or \u201c<strong>Little Jerusalem<\/strong>.\u201d Pitigliano greeted a\u00a0growing<strong> Jewish community<\/strong> until the 19th century. During Fascism, the Jews left the city and after the Second\u00a0World War, the Jewish community slowly dissolved.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Ghetto<\/h3>\n<p>In a fascinating trip you can recognize these signs of Jewish life. Upon being resettled in this part of Pitigliano,\u00a0the Jews adapted the already-existent <strong>excavated spaces<\/strong> to meet the needs of their community: the ritual\u00a0bath, the cellar and the butcher house kosher, dye-works and the unleavened bread bakery. <strong>The Jewish Museum\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Culture<\/strong> preserves the traditions of the life of the Jewish community.<\/p>\n<h3>The \u201cSfratto\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>One of the most typical products of Pitigliano is the \u201c<strong>sfratto dei <em>Goym<\/em><\/strong>\u201d a sweet specialty which symbolizes\u00a0the one used to bang on the Jews&#8217; doors in medieval times to tell them they had to leave their houses and\u00a0move into the ghetto. Today the \u201csfratto\u201d is included in <strong>Slow Food<\/strong>&#8216;s list of Italian &#8220;presidium foods&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>How to get to\u00a0Pitigliano<\/h3>\n<p>From the SS1 Aurelia, direction south, reach Albinia and take the SS 323 of Monte Amiata, then the SS 74\u00a0Maremmana, direction Manciano, continue to Pitigliano and follow the signs to Via Massetana direction\u00a0Massa
