From iron city to beach resort<\/h3>\n

In the 6th century the major centre for the processing of the iron<\/strong> extracted on the Elba Island was the Gulf of\u00a0<\/strong>Follonica<\/strong>, so that in 1546 the Apians decided to build here a foundry.
\nAfter 1836<\/strong> the town became the primary iron-working headquarters, when Leopold II established the administrative\u00a0center of the foundries in the area. The iron foundry closed in the 1960s<\/strong> and since then its strategic\u00a0position have also produced a thriving tourist trade that make of Follonica one of the most popular seaside\u00a0resort<\/strong>s in Tuscany.<\/p>\n

Saint Leopold Church and the old foundry<\/h3>\n

Fine examples of cast iron<\/strong> can be seen around town as a result of religious architecture in cast iron. Look for\u00a0intricate designs on the Saint Leopold Church<\/a><\/strong> and the former Ilva foundry<\/strong>, closed in 1963, today as part of\u00a0Follonica cultural and seat of Maremma Cast Iron Art Museum<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Follonica civic art gallery<\/h3>\n

Follonica is an interesting art centre with the Civic Art Gallery \u201cAmedeo Modigliani\u201d<\/a><\/strong>, located on its lively\u00a0seafront. The permanent collection contains more than 180 works by contemporary artists such as Pablo Picasso<\/strong>,\u00a0Pietro Annigoni<\/strong>, Salvador Dal\u00ec<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
