In Castiglione della\u00a0Pescaia take place the scenes of the novel <em>Palomar<\/em>. The great writer is buried in the village cemetery.<\/p>\n<h3>The history of Castiglione della Pescaia<\/h3>\n<p>Castiglione della Pescaia was a populous settlement in <strong>Roman times<\/strong> and has experienced all the up and\u00a0down during its history. It is resurfaced in the <strong>10th century<\/strong> under joint protection of the <strong>Republic of Pisa<\/strong>.\u00a0The village become a <strong>free Municipality<\/strong> in the 14th century under the protection of <strong>Florenc<\/strong>e until <strong>1446<\/strong> when\u00a0the troops of <strong>Alfonso I of Aragon<\/strong> took the castle. Later it was donated to Siena which in <strong>1559<\/strong> sold Castiglione\u00a0della Pescaia to the <strong>Medici<\/strong> and was incorporated in the<strong> Grand Duchy of Tuscan<\/strong>y with the title of marquisate\u00a0of Castiglione.<\/p>\n<h3>Castiglione castle: the fortified city<\/h3>\n<p>The old bastion of 11th century, perched on the rock of <strong>Poggio Petriccio<\/strong>, is still largely surrounded by medieval\u00a0walls built by the <strong>Pisans<\/strong> and the <strong>Aragonese<\/strong>, including several houses and shops.<br \/>\nThe heart of the town is right next to Corso della Libert\u00e0 , which is one of the most popular places to enjoy\u00a0the nightlife in the summer. The Castle dominates the village offering a superb view of the harbor and the\u00a0coast of Castiglione della Pescaia.<br \/>\nIn this beautiful town one can admire the <strong>Eleonora Palace<\/strong> &#8211; built by Cosimo de &#8216;Medici for his wife Eleonora\u00a0of Toledo, and <strong>the church of St. John the Baptist<\/strong>, a church of medieval origin, almost completely restored\u00a0in the 16th century, and famous for its bell tower built in the <strong>20th century<\/strong> in a gothic style.<\/p>\n<h3>Il Palio Marinaro<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Palio Marinaro<\/strong> organized<strong> in the second half of August<\/strong> is a<strong> rowing boat race<\/strong> between the five districts of\u00a0the popular seaside port and town of Castiglione della Pescaia. The race is followed by\u00a0a spectacular<strong> fireworks show<\/strong>. Not to be missed are also a <strong>parade of illuminated vessel<\/strong>s and the <strong>food festiva<\/strong>l\u00a0which includes the culinary traditions of Castiglione della Pescaia, well known for its <strong>fish dishes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>How to get to\u00a0Castiglione della Pescaia<\/h3>\n<p>Approximately 23 km north of Grosseto, Castiglione della Pescaia can be reached from the SS1 Aurelia\u00a0Road, take exit Follonica (coming from north) or Grosseto South (coming from the south) and then continue\u00a0direction S322 and follow the signs to the city center.<br \/>\nThere are
