Populated\u00a0since the Paleolithic on Pianosa there are still preserved remains of a <strong>Roman villa<\/strong> and a system of <strong>catacombs<\/strong>.\u00a0Olive trees have been planted in and around vineyards for thousands of years, so that today there is\u00a0only lentiscus of the Mediterranean, while numerous herbaceous species color the landscape with their flowers.<\/p>\n<h3>Pianosa sea bottoms<\/h3>\n<p>Since ancient times <strong>crossroads of trade routes<\/strong>, the waters of this ecosystem with extraordinary archeological\u00a0and ecological value are inhabited by a lot of species. A paradise that the historical and political vicissitudes\u00a0have well preserved.<\/p>\n<h3>The prison<\/h3>\n<p>Pianosa used to be a penitentiary and a penal colony. In <strong>1856<\/strong>, the<strong> &#8220;Agricultural penal colony of Pianosa&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>was established for <strong>political prisoners<\/strong>. Even <strong>Sandro Pertini<\/strong>, the then future president of Italy, who had been\u00a0arrested in 1932 for political reasons, was there for some time a &#8220;guest&#8221;. In the 1970s, however, the serenity\u00a0on the island ended when the State established a maximum security prison there.
