Composed mainly of gray-pink granite, this\u00a0mysterious island is located south of <a href=\"\/en\/tuscan-islands\/elba-island\/\"><strong>Elba<\/strong><\/a>, west of the <strong><a href=\"\/en\/tuscan-islands\/giglio-island\/\">Giglio Island<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"\/en\/beaches-sea\/monte-argentario-grosseto\/\">Monte Argentario.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>The Island of Edmond Dant\u00e8s<\/h3>\n<p>The island inspired the writer <strong>Alexander Dumas<\/strong> who completed in 1844 his famous novel <strong>\u201cThe Count of\u00a0Montecristo\u201d<\/strong>. The tiny island of the Archipelago is the site of an enormous hidden treasure as told\u00a0by the Abbot Faria and here Dant\u00e9s, the Count of Montecristo lived here and took refuge after completing\u00a0his revenge against the oppressors.<\/p>\n<h3>An unassailable island<\/h3>\n<p>Nowadays Montecristo Island is a very restricted zone. The only four people who live there today are <strong>two\u00a0<\/strong><strong>agents<\/strong>, who every two weeks alternate with another couple of agents. To visit the island it is necessary the\u00a0<strong>permission<\/strong> of an office of the State Forestry Corps of issued mainly to researchers, schools, voluntary associations,\u00a0with a maximum of 1,000 visitors per year.<\/p>\n<h3>Villa-Watson Taylor\u00a0and the convent<\/h3>\n<p>Montecristo&#8217;s<strong> only natural harbor<\/strong> is <strong>Cala Maestra<\/strong>, on the northwest side, where is located Villa Watson-Taylor, whose construction dates back to the mid-nineteenth thanks to an Englishman called Watson Taylor.\u00a0Also from Cala Maestra, to the northeast, in about an hour you can reach the convent situated about 345 meters\u00a0above sea level with ruins of an ancient monastery dating back from the 5th century AC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Covering approximately 10 square kilometers, the island of Montecristo is one of the wildest uncontaminated\u00a0islands of the entire Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
