About six miles separate Giannutri from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porto_Santo_Stefano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porto Santo Stefano<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0This 3 km long and over 500 meters wide half-moon shaped island is characterized by four rocky peaks\u00a0(Poggio del Capelrosso, Monte Mario, Monte Adami and Poggio del Cannone) and rugged coastline, with\u00a0numerous bays and coves.<\/p>\n<h3>Giannutri beaches<\/h3>\n<p>Two tiny stone <strong>beaches<\/strong> are on this island: <strong>Cala dello Spalmatoio<\/strong> on the northeast side and <strong>Cala Maestra<\/strong> on\u00a0the northwest side. The wild nature has remained virtually intact through the centuries.\u00a0For long times was <strong>uninhabited<\/strong>, except during the <strong>Roman Empire<\/strong> when in the 2nd century BC was built\u00a0near Cala Maestra an harbor and a superlative villa. The entire island is a nature reserve where there aren\u2019t\u00a0hotels and camping is prohibited. Mediterranean scrub and oak forests are chosen by several species of migratory\u00a0nesting birds. Giannutri is also known as the &#8220;island of the gulls&#8221; for the numerous yellowlegged\u00a0gulls (Larus michahellis) which nest here.\u00a0The crystal clear waters of the Giannutri represents a Marine Reserve to protect sponges, corals and many\u00a0marine plants which cover the sea bottoms and to facilitate fish restocking.<\/p>\n<h3>How to get to Giannutri<\/h3>\n<p>A visit on the island of Giannutri is it possible with a mini cruise departing from the nearby port of Castiglione\u00a0della Pescaia.
