The\u00a0island was inhabited in ancient times by populations of Ligurian stock, who first gained its first name Ilvates,\u00a0becoming during the Roman period Ilva, then changed in the Middle Ages in Ilba Helba. But the most famous\u00a0name by which the Island of Elba was known in the ancient times was \u0391\u03b9\u03b8\u03ac\u03bb\u03b7 (Aith\u00e0le) o \u0391\u03b9\u03b8\u03ac\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1\u00a0(Aith\u00e0leia) because of the <strong>fires rose<\/strong> from the ovens used to smelt<strong> iron<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Nature and culture on the Elba Island<\/h3>\n<p>A fantastic heritage of natural beauty guaranteed by the protection and the enhancement of the <strong>territory<\/strong> and\u00a0the environment. The entire territory is a <strong>paradise<\/strong> for lovers of nature sports, especially diving, hiking and\u00a0cycling.<\/p>\n<h3>The many landscapes of the coast<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Elba Island<\/strong> offers a variety of stunning landscapes: from the granite cliffs that fall steeply into the sea, to\u00a0wide golden sandy beaches that characterize the south and the northwest coast (as Lacona, Biodola Procchio),\u00a0small <strong>white pebble beach<\/strong> in Portoferraio (Le Ghiaie, Capo Bianco, Sansone) or<strong> black iron-rich sands\u00a0<\/strong>along the east coast (Terranera and Topinetti). Along the coast of Elba there are many small bays accessible\u00a0only by sea or along a panoramic path.<\/p>\n<h3>The many landscapes of the coast:\u00a0the inside<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Blooming valleys<\/strong>, Monte Capanne (the highest peak of the island with its approximately 1,020 mt), <strong>medieval\u00a0<\/strong><strong>villages<\/strong> set on the <strong>hills<\/strong> as Capoliveri, Rio nell&#8217;Elba or Marciana, and charming fishing villages as Marciana\u00a0Marina and Porto Azzurro. On the Elba Island every place is a discovery.<\/p>\n<h3>The history of Elba Island<\/h3>\n<p>Enormous is the presence of<strong> historical buildings<\/strong> and <strong>archaeological sites<\/strong> on Elba Island. Etruscan buildings,\u00a0ancient monasteries, small churches, fortresses and other historic buildings, Spanish castles and Napoleonic\u00a0residences are scattered all over the island and offer many opportunities to make interesting cultural visits.\u00a0The Island offer a fascinating visit also to the metal mines of the &#8220;Mining Park of &#8216;Elba &#8220;.<\/p>\n<h3>How to get to the Elba Island<\/h3>\n<p>A visit on the Elba Island is it possible with a mini cruise departing from the nearby port of Castiglione della\u00a0Pescaia.
